How do I become a Geek Pop star?
***PRESS RELEASE 17th August 2009: official call for Geek Pop 2010 artists announced***
If you think you could write a chemistry classic, a biology ballad, or a physics folk song; if you can simultaneously strum an acoustic guitar/bang on a steel drum and appreciate the Periodic Table of Elements, your talents are required. We don’t care whether you’ve got a record deal with EMI, or a PhD in rocket science, or both - as long as the tunes are good, and, of course, suitably sciencey.
In 2010, Geek Pop is looking primarily for original music - tracks that won’t be widely available for download until the launch or alternative versions of existing tracks. The same goes for comedians for our new Comical Flask stage - we’d prefer recordings that won’t be released prior to the launch. There are also opportunities to play live gigs at our launch week events in Bristol, Cambridge and London.
BUT WHY SHOULD I BOTHER?
1) Play on a (virtual) stage at the world’s only sci-pop music festival.
2) Get your voice heard, not just through your music, but through interviews with Geek Pop hosts in our festival green room.
3) Links to your website/MySpace page etc from the Geek Pop festival site.
4) Opportunities for international exposure on t’internet.
5) No need to travel to get to the venue.
6) Be part of something different. Whoever heard of a virtual geek music festival?
In 2009, the Geek Pop festival site looked like this - click on the stages to find directions to artist home pages.
OKAY, I’M IN, SO WHAT NOW?
There are no official entry requirements, but we would love it if you could organise video footage (however ropey) of your set. We will be taking pitches for 2010 until around Christmas time 2009 but if you get your pitch in earlier, we will be able to do more to promote your music prior to the festival. If your tracks aren’t finished yet, we’d still like to hear from you as soon as possible - send some other samples to show us what you can do.
You can apply here or write to crew@geekpop.co.uk to ask us questions.
Good luck!
Please note: Geek Pop is a free music festival. We don’t charge admission and we provide every visitor with a free recording of the event in the form of a podcast. We rely on artists who are happy to exchange their music for the exposure the event offers them.
