Oh and and here's the story behind it all (as if anyone's interested)...
About January time this year, Helen Arney contacted us with some ideas about her Geek Pop 2011 performance. We'd been in cahoots about a potential Geek Pop single release previously, but many things - including Christmas, and a complete lack of organisation - got in the way. So, offering up a brand spanking and sparkly new song that she'd performed at the Funny Women Awards in September...
...Helen wanted to give it another bash. Only this time, we suggested releasing not just a single, but a WHOLE EP full of bonus tracks from Geek Pop artists. Well, one thing led to another and soon six artists (including two collaborating for a duet) were on board. Last to join the (top secret) project was Jonny Berliner. His Genetics Calypso, first recorded for the Geek Pop sessions on Green Man FM, came out of production - hand-clapping and all - just in time.
By this point, we'd gotten carried away and roped in an illustrator, Tom Humberstone, to create the artwork, and even ordered some vinyl-effect CDs to make physical copies. Quick as a flash, Tom created three awesome design ideas for fifties-style cover art and we chose the one that Tom felt "captured the inner geek in us all".
Meanwhile, Martin Austwick, who was also preparing for his own album release and our London launch gig, was advising us on matters of Bandcamp and digital distribution. And we'd roped in our Twitter followers to choose a name for a "hypothetical" record. It wasn't long before we found ourselves uploading Geek Like Me (which had by then morphed into a mini-album) to be distributed by every major music download site on the internet. That was scary.

Finally, one Saturday near the end of February, we found ourselves at Geek Pop HQ with a box full of CDs, a pile of Tom's lovely artwork and a guillotine. And a couple of weeks later, we're unleashing Geek Like Me on the WORLD!

The Geek Pop 2011 festival is go! Our highlights include the awesome Jeffrey Lewis headlining at The Tetrahedron, a song about Professor Brian Cox and a musical rendition of the Fibonacci series. In a surprise extra podcast (surprising because we didn't know we were doing it), we bring you an unplugged session with Spirit of Play and snippets from our interviews with Spirit of Play and Dr Stuart Clark of Dr Stu & the Neutron Stars. For full length versions of those interviews, head to the Green Room. There are also video highlights for all our London acts here.
We'll be featuring more unplugged sessions recorded at our live gigs in our regular Geek Pop podcast, so make sure you subscribe to catch that (it's free!). And if you want to submit sciencey song suggestions for the podcast, tweet at us or email crew@geekpop.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you and in the mean time... enjoy the music.
HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE?
Just subscribe to our podcast feed through iTunes or Google. It's like, totally free. That's not all though. You'll also receive a bunch of free music downloads from our previous festivals.
Standard Podcasts [15:25m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download | Embeddable Player | Hits (686)What with the London gig on Thursday night (audio/video coming soon) we didn't quite get round to posting a festival diary entry yesterday. But as consolation, here's something far more exciting... Baba Brinkman's new video for his Geek Pop exclusive track "Off That".
For more from Baba, including his evolutionary rap, head to his set on the Tetrahedron Stage, where you can download 'Off That' as a free MP3 (just right click and choose save as) or his website at Baba's Word. The awesome video is the work of Tommy Nagle and the images are courtesy of New Humanist magazine.

It's time to celebrate the launch of Geek Pop '10, our third annual geek music festival! Hooray! These are our highlights, bursting with an eclectic mix of science-inspired songs, from rationalist raps to blues about Brownian motion. But it doesn't stop there - we have over 30 acts this year, spread across four different virtual stages. So once you've heard the highlights, make sure you explore the rest of the festival site.
Thanks to our artists for putting on such a great show this year, and to all our sponsors and supporters for making it happen.
All the individual tracks on this podcast will appear in your iTunes, but you'll need to come to the site to download the rest. And if you're not already subscribed... why ever not? Do it now! It's free! You'll also get our monthly podcast.
