Spirit of Play

Spirit of Play

ABOUT SPIRIT OF PLAY: Last year in August, somewhere near the Brecon Beacons in Wales, a gaggle of geeks sat around a bonfire and played science-based songs late into the night. (Well, about 8.30pm). Two of them were Spirit of Play's Michael Caines and Lucy Dallas, fresh from their performance on the Solar Stage in Einstein's Garden, Green Man Festival. Along for the ride were Geek Pop and Geek Calendar crew members. Shortly after, Spirit of Play rose to new heights of internet fame after featuring in the Geek Calendar promo video - for it was on that fateful night that they met video producer Greg Foot and he asked them to re-record their 2009 Geek Pop classic 'Geek Pop of the Week' especially for the purpose. It was no surprise to us that they agreed, since when asked (by us) in an interview why they had started writing songs about science, they replied "Because you asked us to". Such eager geeks. And so many delightful tunes, of the type that define the geek pop genre so well - songs about chromosomes, particle physics, parallel universes... and not forgetting their brand new track 'An Element Sends a Postcard Home', released on the Geek Like Me mini-album. Thus, we hope it came as no surprise to them that when they asked us to find a last-minute spot at Geek Pop 2011 for Spirit of Play, we were happy to oblige.
